The Department of Conservation of Monuments and Preventive Archaeology of the APSARA National Authority is currently restoring O Thma Dap Temple, a brick temple located in Jayavarman–Norodom Phnom Kulen National Park, with the aim of strengthening and preserving the monument.
Mr. Leu Channora, an archaeologist and official of the APSARA National Authority, said the restoration project spans four months. The team has focused on repairing the eastern side of the temple, where significant cracks extended from the base to the upper structure. Restoration work includes restoring a sandstone doorway, lintel, and pillars, reinforcing cracks on the western side, and removing vegetation from the top of the temple.
According to Mr. Leu Channora, O Thma Dap Temple remains in relatively good condition and features high-relief carvings at each corner, making it an attractive destination for visitors. The installation of a new sandstone doorway has further enhanced the temple’s appearance and is expected to draw more tourists. O Thma Dap is one of the few brick temples on Kulen Mountain that has survived almost entirely, while most others remain only as foundations or scattered brick remains.
The temple, estimated to be over 1,200 years old, had never undergone structural restoration in the past, receiving only archaeological research, routine maintenance, and cleaning. Prior to the current project, the eastern structure showed severe cracking and falling stones.
Although located far from the Angkor area, the leadership of the APSARA National Authority has consistently paid attention to the conservation of heritage sites on Kulen Mountain and encouraged the preparation of a formal restoration project. Mr. Leu Channora emphasized that the restoration aims not only to preserve this ancient temple but also to promote cultural tourism in the Kulen Mountain area.
