The APSARA National Authority is currently undertaking a restoration project focused on the Neang Chral, a significant roof decoration at Banteay Samre Temple. This initiative is being carried out by a dedicated restoration team from the Department of Conservation of Monuments and Preventive Archaeology, with the aim of enhancing the temple’s aesthetic appeal.
Mr. Long Nary, who leads the restoration team, emphasized the architectural importance of the Neang Chral at Banteay Samre. He noted that many of these decorative elements have suffered damage and have fallen to the ground over time. His team is actively collecting these pieces to restore and reinforce them, ensuring they are returned to their original positions. A total of at least 300 Neang Chral are slated for restoration.
Like many historical structures, the Neang Chral at Banteay Samre have deteriorated due to natural elements and the passage of time. While some Neang Chral remain intact from previous restorations, those efforts employed cement and small iron cores, which have proven inadequate for long-term preservation. Mr. Nary explained that this current restoration will utilize mortar along with modern tools and materials, providing a more durable solution to ensure the Neang Chral can withstand the test of time.
Mr. Nary expressed optimism that the completed restoration will not only beautify Banteay Samre Temple but also attract an increased number of visitors to this historical site.
