The restoration of the eastern causeway at Beng Mealea Temple is nearing completion, with about 90% of the work achieved. The project, led by a restoration team from the APSARA National Authority, has been ongoing for over 14 months and has focused on repairing and strengthening various components of the causeway, which had fallen into a state of disrepair.
Ms. Boeut Sopak, a technical staff member from the Department of Conservation of Monuments and Preventive Archaeology, noted that significant progress has been made, including the reinforcement of foundations on both the north and south sides, installation of a Naga balustrade, and the placement of beams and pillars. The northern side is nearly complete, with only minor tasks remaining.
Before restoration efforts began, the eastern causeway was severely damaged, with the Naga body completely dislodged and parts of the foundation compromised by tree roots and natural wear over time. The restoration initiative was funded through the Mekong-Lancang Project and commenced in mid-May 2024, with a completion target set for the end of July 2025.
The APSARA National Authority team aims to ensure that the causeway is robust enough for future generations. In the meantime, it is gradually being opened to tourists, who can now visit this historic site as restoration progresses.
