The APSARA National Authority has been actively engaged in restoring and strengthening the brick tower G13 of the Phnom Bakheng Temple over the past two months. This initiative is part of a broader effort to preserve the historical integrity of the temple, which stands over 10 meters tall.
Ms. Chhun Ratana, who leads the restoration team from the Department of Conservation of Monuments and Preventive Archaeology, highlighted the precarious condition of tower G13. Despite previous support from the World Monuments Fund (WMF), the tower remains at risk of collapse. The restoration work commenced in early May 2025, focusing on reinforcing the structure from the foundation to the roof in a systematic manner. This involves sealing bricks with mortar to prevent water infiltration and weed growth, which could further compromise the integrity of the tower.
The first phase of the restoration targets the upper portion of the tower, extending up to 5 meters high, and is expected to be completed by the end of November 2025. A second phase is planned for the following year to continue these efforts.
Phnom Bakheng Temple is surrounded by a total of 44 brick towers, with previous restoration efforts having successfully addressed towers G14 and G15 in 2024, and G5 and G10 in collaboration with WMF back in 2012. The ongoing restoration projects are crucial due to the deterioration caused by factors such as age, construction materials, and environmental conditions.
This phased approach to restoration and conservation demonstrates APSARA National Authority’s commitment to preserving Cambodia’s rich cultural heritage.
