APSARA National Authority to complete the restoration of the Buddha statues at Angkor Wat’s Bakan Tower soon

APSARA National Authority’s restoration team plans to complete the restoration work of the Buddha statue at Angkor Wat’s Bakan Tower soon.

Soy Sophearin, an archaeologist of the APSARA National Authority and the head of a project, said the project is scheduled to finish soon, while the restoration team was currently painting for the final work.

Mr. Sophearin recalled that the original condition of the Buddha statues was dilapidated that needed to be restored and preserved immediately. He explained that on the statues, there were black clay, dust, salt, bat droppings, and bat urine. He said that the cleaning is divided into two parts, dry cleaning by removing the dust that is stuck on the surface of the body with a soft brush to wipe clean. Then wet clean, first take water to clean with a cotton swab wrapped in small sticks and soaked in non-mineral water to wipe the black spot, dust, salt, bat droppings, and bat urine and the original color remained the same.

So far about 90 percent of the restoration work is completed after the project started in mid-January 2022. In 2021, the APSARA National Authority restored a Buddha statue in the south. In 2022, three more Buddha statues are being restored in the north, west, and east, as well as two Nirvana Buddhas in the east and north. The team also restored and strengthened the window pillars and some other structures around the statue. The restoration project was funded by Lok Chumteav Sieng Chanheng, President of Heng Development Company.
