Three generations – Ek Eam’s family for restoration work in the Angkor site
In the restoration site of Ta Nei temple, which is located in the Angkor forest, the restoration team is carving the colonettes of the ancient temple to replace the old stone that was lost during the restoration of the eastern gate of Ta Nei temple.
Ek Eam, a 62-year-old resident of Beng village, Kork Chok commune, Siem Reap city, who specializes in stone carving. He said that he had been working as a restorer of ancient temples since 1999. The reason he decided to become a restorer of the ancient temple is that he loves ancient temples and also wants to work to maintain and restore them.
Mr. Ek Eam added that three generations of his family are the ones who work as the temple restorers in the Angkor site. His grandfather had been working as a restorer of ancient temples since Cambodia was under the French colony. His father was also in charge of restoring ancient temples between 1960 and 1971. The friendly old man said that when he was a child, he used to follow his father to restore the temple, so he became a restorer of ancient temples such as his ancestors.
He continued that during the 23 years of restoration work of ancient temples, Mr. Ek Eam has been involved in the restoration of many temples, such as Baphuon, Ta Prohm, Srah Srang, Angkor Wat, West Mebon, and Ta Nei in the Angkor site. In addition, he also participated in the restoration work of Banteay Chhmar temple, located in Banteay Chhmar commune, Thmor Puok district of Banteay Meanchey province.
Mr. Ek Eam’s restoration achievements are left in many ancient temples with art carvings or Apsara carvings, etc. When some ancient temple stones are broken and need to be replaced with new stones and carved like the pattern of the original stones.
Although Ek Eam has been in the restoration work of Angkor for three generations, his children, there may not have been a successor in Angkor like him. In this restoration work of Angkor, Mr. Eam was determined that he would continue to do so until he is no longer to do this work. He also likes to help teach Cambodian children who want to know the stone carving skills in the restoration work of the temples to be ready to become a successor for the next generation.
