On the morning of October 1, 2026, the APSARA National Authority held a ceremony to reattach the heads of two deity statues at the Victory Gate of Angkor Thom as part of the “Returning Spirits to Their Original Sites” campaign.
The ceremony was presided over by H.E. Dr. Phoeurng Sackona, Minister of Culture and Fine Arts and President of the Board of the APSARA National Authority. Distinguished guests included Samdech Preah Brahma Rattanamony Sereysovano Pin Sem; Mr. Flavio Bonetti, UNESCO Representative to Cambodia; Ms. Katherine Diop, Public Affairs Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Cambodia; senior officials from the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts; representatives of the Siem Reap Provincial Administration; APSARA leadership; and other officials and staff.
In her remarks, H.E. Dr. Phoeurng Sackona highlighted the profound cultural and historical significance of the ceremony. She explained that the Victory Gate was an important ceremonial site where Khmer kings traditionally conducted major royal ceremonies, including coronation rituals and departures for military campaigns. The restoration of the deity and asura sculptures not only enhances the site’s beauty but also helps restore an important part of Cambodia’s cultural heritage for future generations and visitors.
A total of 108 devas (gods) and asuras (demons), representing the Churning of the Ocean of Milk, line the approach to the Victory Gate. Over the centuries, particularly during periods of conflict, many of their sandstone heads were lost and scattered to different locations in Cambodia and abroad.
Through long-standing cooperation between the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, the APSARA National Authority, and international partners—including UNESCO, France, Japan, and the United States—many of the missing heads have been recovered. Some were found through archaeological excavations, while others were recovered from the Angkor Conservation Office, museums, or repatriated from abroad following formal requests.
To date, almost all of the missing heads have been recovered. Only three remain in museums abroad, and efforts are continuing to facilitate their return to Cambodia and, ultimately, to their original locations.
Mr. Flavio Bonetti, UNESCO Representative to Cambodia, expressed his appreciation for the ceremony, describing it as an important act of respect for Khmer culture and its World Heritage significance. He noted that UNESCO has supported Cambodia through the ICC-Angkor since 1993 and has worked closely with the APSARA National Authority for more than three decades to preserve and conserve Angkor.
Ms. Katherine Diop, Public Affairs Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Cambodia, highlighted the long-standing cooperation between Cambodia and the United States in protecting cultural heritage. Under the Memorandum of Understanding on cultural property, the United States has supported efforts to repatriate Cambodian antiquities. Through cooperation between the two governments, approximately 900 artifacts have been repatriated to Cambodia over the years.
The “Returning Spirits to Their Original Sites” campaign reflects Cambodia’s peaceful and secure environment, which allows heritage custodians to reunite these sculptures with their original locations. The initiative also supports the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts’ ongoing policy to strengthen the preservation and restoration of Cambodia’s cultural heritage.
