The restoration project on the northern corner of Phnom Bakheng temple, implemented by the World Monuments Fund, is progressing to date, with about 50% of the project completed.
Ms. Ginevra Boatto, in charge of the WMF Conservation Project, said that the third phase of the restoration project in the northern corner of Phnom Bakheng, implemented in 2019, has now reached 50%. She said the work could take another six years to complete.
Unlike other temples, Phnom Bakheng was damaged due to time and weather conditions, which caused the structure of the temple to be damaged and tilted, and some places collapsed, such as on each corner due to water runoff. The restorations were made by removing the stones at the bottom of the foundation by compacting the new foundation and ensuring that water did not drain further. Apart from that, there are also tower restorations on each corner that have collapsed, etc.
The person in charge of the WMF Conservation Project confirmed that the project to preserve and restore the Phnom Bakheng temple, which is a cooperation project with the APSARA National Authority, started in 2009. And in the next step, WMF will consider helping to preserve other temples at the Angkor site. After being in Siem Reap for more than 30 years, WMF has helped preserve some temples, such as Preah Khan, Ta Som, Angkor Wat, and Phnom Bakheng.
