The APSARA National Authority is restoring and reinforcing a 20-meter section of the northern embankment of Angkor Wat’s moat, following proper conservation principles and technical standards.

Ms. Nong Boravy, an archaeologist with the APSARA National Authority, said this is the ninth phase of the northern moat embankment restoration project, which began in 2013. Each year, the Department of Conservation of Monuments and Preventive Archaeology restores a 20-meter section to gradually preserve the embankment’s historical value and appearance. By the end of 2026, a total of 183 meters will have been restored.

The ninth phase began in mid-2026 and is expected to be completed by the end of the year. According to Ms. Nong Boravy, decades of war and the lack of regular maintenance weakened the embankment’s foundation, causing the upper stone layers to collapse and lose their original structure. In addition, the roots of large trees and vegetation growing along the embankment have gradually displaced and separated the stones, further damaging the original construction.

During the restoration, the APSARA conservation team dismantles unstable sections, repairs damaged stones, constructs temporary retaining structures, compacts the foundation, and reinstalls the stones according to their original layout. The embankment consists of seven layers of laterite blocks forming the lower structure, topped by three layers of sandstone blocks.

Ms. Nong Boravy expressed confidence that once completed, the restoration will preserve the integrity and beauty of Angkor Wat’s moat embankment while providing visitors with an attractive setting to appreciate and photograph this remarkable heritage site.
