The residents of Bangkorng Village in Ampil Commune, Prasat Bakong District, are preparing for their annual Lerng Meak ceremony by engaging in a traditional community fishing event. This cherished practice occurs after the rice harvest and is set for February 9, 2025, at the village’s designated pond, which is typically off-limits for fishing except during this special occasion.
Village chief Mr. Pech Khin emphasized that only traditional fishing methods, such as small nets and hooks, are permitted during this communal activity. The fish caught will be divided: some will be used for family meals while others will be prepared for noodle soup and various snacks.
The celebration spans several days, with fishing taking place on the 9th, followed by rice cake preparation on the 10th. The culmination of the festivities occurs on the 11th when the ceremony committee and village elders gather at the village hall to perform traditional rituals. Mr. Khin expressed a desire for greater participation from the youth and villagers in these rituals to ensure that their cultural traditions endure for generations to come.
This annual event not only strengthens community bonds but also preserves the rich cultural heritage of the villagers.
