The APSARA National Authority has partnered with Sophia University in Japan to enhance the training of human resources in archaeological excavations. This collaboration aims to share knowledge and ensure the passing down of skills to the next generation of archaeologists.
As part of this initiative, a joint excavation was conducted within the walls of the Banteay Kdei temple, situated on an ancient mound. The focus of the excavation, which commenced in August 2024, was to study the structure of the mound and its relationship to the temple wall.
Keo Chhonlyly, a third-year student from the Faculty of Archaeology at the Royal University of Fine Arts, shared her enthusiasm about participating in this excavation for the second consecutive year. She emphasized the importance of hands-on experience, stating that research excavations provide invaluable knowledge and practical experience that complement her theoretical studies.
Similarly, Lam Sothorn, a second-year archaeology student, expressed his excitement about his first research experience at an Angkor site. He noted that the practical exposure helped him understand critical processes such as dividing excavation pits, marking them, and documenting findings. This experience not only increased his awareness of archaeological research but also equipped him with new knowledge and skills that will enhance his future studies.
