The window pillars at the second gallery of Angkor Wat have been re-installed after repairs.
Experts from the APSARA National Authority have installed sandstone window pillars at the second gallery of Angkor Wat temple to their original place. The sandstone window pillars weighing more than 50-60 kg, and more than 1.72 meters high, which experts have reassembled at the original site, have suffered severe damage and fallen for a long time.
Soy Sophearith, an archaeologist and conservation agent at Angkor Wat from the Department of Conservation of Monuments and Preventive Archaeology of the APSARA National Authority said that his team had been repairing the sandstone window pillars since early April 2023. The repair started with collecting small and large pieces of window pillars to assemble them, trying not to replace them with new stones.
Mr. Soy Sophearin said that the repair of window pillars at the second gallery of Angkor Wat was carried out by experts and used appropriate repair techniques by the standards that could ensure original and long-term safety. The ICC-Angkor’s Adhoc Experts also recognized procedures and repairs, such as salt removal, gluing, and reinforcement.
