The Korea Heritage Agency, in collaboration with experts from the APSARA National Authority, has successfully completed the restoration of Chorm Temple, part of the Prasat Preah Pithu Group, as of December. The restoration project began in 2019.
Mr. Eo Jinkyu, architect and head of the restoration project for the Terrace of the Elephants and the Prasat Preah Pithu Group under the Korea Heritage Agency, said that Chorm Temple has regained its structural strength following the careful and systematic restoration work. He explained that the project involved dismantling the entire stone structure and reassembling it, with a total of 313 stones found around the temple returned to their original positions.
Mr. Eo Jinkyu expressed his satisfaction with the successful completion of the project, noting that Chorm Temple has now recovered its complete and solid appearance after having suffered significant damage prior to restoration. He also expressed hope that tourists and the public will soon be able to visit the temple once it is officially reopened by the APSARA National Authority.
Prior to restoration, Chorm Temple was in a severely deteriorated condition due to its age, natural weathering, and tree roots that had penetrated deep into the structure, reaching the foundation. These factors weakened the temple’s stability and led to partial collapse. To address these issues, the restoration team dismantled all the stones, carefully reassembled the structure, and replaced missing architectural elements, including lintels, pillars, and outer door frames.
