Experts are currently engaged in the restoration of the southwest wall of the second platform of Phnom Bakheng Temple, a significant historical site. This effort is being carried out in collaboration with the World Monument Fund from the United States, under the auspices of the APSARA National Authority.
Mr. Chiv Phearum, an architect involved in the project, reported that nearly 90% of the wall is damaged, particularly at the corners where stone has been almost entirely eroded. The deterioration is attributed to natural aging and environmental factors, such as tree roots infiltrating the walls and rainwater runoff causing further erosion. The restoration work aims to address these issues, with plans to complete the repairs by the end of 2024.
The restoration initiative began in August 2019 and has already seen significant progress. Repairs on four shrines have been completed, and work on five staircases is about 90% finished. Additionally, approximately 30% of the flooring in the third and fourth platforms has been restored. The walls of the first, third, and fourth platforms have also been repaired by about 80%.
This ongoing restoration underscores the commitment to preserving Cambodia’s cultural heritage.
