The APSARA National Authority is undertaking restoration efforts on the brick library tower located at the northeast corner of Phnom Krom Temple to prevent further damage and ensure its long-term sustainability.
According to Mr. Ros Visoth, a Conservation Officer with APSARA, the temple’s structure is particularly vulnerable due to the hot and humid climate, as well as air pressure from the nearby Tonle Sap Lake. The library tower has suffered significant deterioration, including the loss of mortar, erosion of wall footings, and damage to sandstone door components. Additionally, the northwest corner wall has been torn, and the upper sections of the temple have sustained water damage during rainfall.
In response to these issues, the APSARA National Authority is focusing on restoring and reinforcing the surrounding walls, specifically addressing concerns at both the southwest and northeast corners. Efforts will also include strengthening the temple’s top structure to protect it against water infiltration and insect damage, all while adhering to the guidelines set forth in the Angkor Charter.
Phnom Krom Temple, located in Phnom Krom village within Sangkat Siem Reap, Siem Reap City, was constructed during the late 9th and early 10th centuries using brick, sandstone, and laterite materials. It is situated on a mountain that rises 140 meters high and is approximately 12 kilometers south of Siem Reap.
