The restoration team is making significant progress in restoring the southern stairs and lion statues of Phnom Bakheng Temple, with a target completion date set for mid-2024. The collaboration between the APSARA National Authority and the World Monument Fund of the United States has been instrumental in this effort.
Mr. Van Va, the head of the Phnom Bakheng Temple site, reported that the restoration work on the five-level staircase structure is currently at 80% completion, with only one level remaining to be restored. The team anticipates another five months to complete this phase.
Regarding the lion statues, only five out of the twelve have been repaired so far due to various damages such as broken legs, bodies, and heads. Some fragments were too severely damaged to be reassembled, despite efforts to identify and restore them. It is noteworthy that these lion statues were previously restored during the French era.
