Residents of Leang Dai commune, Angkor Thom district, hold a rain-prayer ceremony at Neak Poan Temple to get rain as soon as the farming season approaches. The ceremony lasts for one night and two days. In the morning, there is a ceremony for the monks to serve food, and a three-round oath to pour water into the pond to drain water from the large pool into the small pool in all four directions. Water is poured and sprinkled on each other during the procession, symbolizing rain.
The items in the ceremony include religious offerings, a pig head, candles, incense, rice, soup, dessert, fruit, and drinks. Some villagers pack food and come as a family to participate in this traditional ceremony. They are happy and expect the rain to fall soon after the ceremony is finished.
Many people attend this year’s event, including Leang Dai villagers, Samrong village, Phlong village, Angkor Thom district, and people from nearby areas. The ceremony confirms that agriculture is still an important sector of the locals, despite the booming tourism sector. The villagers are still relying on the rain. Especially this year, the drought and heat continue for many more weeks, and the locals are even more involved in celebrating this rain-prayer ceremony. In general, people living in the Angkor area always hold this ceremony every year from their ancestors in various forms depending on the area where they live.
