APSARA National Authority continues the restoration project of the Banteay Kdei temple’s west gate
The restoration team of the APSARA National Authority continues to the west gate of Banteay Kdei temple in the second phase.
Archaeologist and head of the Banteay Kdei temple’s west gate restoration site, Ms. Net Simon, said that the second phase of the restoration work will take two steps. The first step is to study the shape and form of the gate. As well as collecting information and preparing documents. The second step is to start the restoration project, including the removal of stones to strengthen the foundation and then reassemble the stones using the same techniques as before and using auxiliary equipment.
Ms. Net Simon said that in 2022, the team had studied the foundation and found the stones that fell, and the repair of the gate is like arranging two temples next to each other and combining only one with the connecting beams and then preparing the roof stone of four-faces statues. This kind of work has caused some difficulties for the team.
It should be noted that the west gate of Banteay Kdei temple was severely damaged due to the age of the stone, the trees grow roots in the stones and the foundation, causing the stones to break apart. Another problem is that the termites also push the soil out of the foundation, causing holes in the bottom, which bring rainwater to seep through the stones’ gaps into the foundation, causing the foundation to be tilted.
