Two lion statues will be placed on the central terrace of Angkor Wat’s causeway after the renovation is completed
Two lion statues weighing more than 3 tons, and more than 2 meters high, taken from the northern part of the central terrace of Angkor Wat’s causeway since 1997 to be stored at the Angkor Conservation, are being restored about 95% by the stone conservation team of APSARA National Authority. After the completion of the renovation work, APSARA National Authority is ready to relocate these lion statues to be placed on the central terrace of Angkor Wat’s causeway in early November 2022 after leaving the original site for about 25 years.
Long Nary, head of the stone conservation team from the Department of Conservation of Monuments and Preventive Archaeology, said that the lion statues have been repaired since April 2022. Initially, the team prepared documents and collected small and large pieces of the original statues together. By now, these lion statues have been restored, having filled the damaged area, such as the legs, feet, body, and other parts of the lion statues, which are necessary to ensure the longevity of the statues to avoid further damage.
Mr. Nary added that the lion statues before repairing were in a dilapidated condition, with broken parts on the legs, feet, chest, and back. In the French period, the lion statues were repaired with cement and steel to keep them stable, but later they gradually disintegrated over time.
He confirmed that in repairing, the team also used appropriate repair techniques following the standards, which can ensure the original characteristics and long-term safety of the lion statues. The techniques and repairs are also recognized by Adhoc experts.
