APSARA National Authority restoring 25-meter embankment in the south of Angkor Wat’s causeway

The restoring team of the Department of Conservation of Monuments and Preventive Archaeology of the APSARA National Authority has been restoring the embankment in the south of Angkor Wat’s causeway, a total length of 25 meters, while the condition of the site is in a state of disrepair and collapse.

Ms. Sim Dany, the technical officer, said that this is the third phase of the project, which started in August. This work is focused on strengthening the foundation and high-risk areas of the embankment.

Regarding the restoration process, Ms. Dany explained that the team is removing the damaged stones to another location to easily repair and strengthen the foundation before rearranging those stones to their original position. She added that the condition of the embankment is deteriorating due to the quality of the concrete used in the French period during 1962, so it needs to be removed and replaced with traditional mortar.
