While illegal construction has widespread recently, the World Heritage Site of Angkor may face problems if it is not protected. Responding to this, APSARA Authority tried to coordinate with people, who had illegally built the constructions by asking them to dismantle their own constructions. In the case that some people have not voluntarily dismantled their illegal buildings, APSARA is necessary to use administrative structures to dismantle those illegal constructions.
Ms. Anne Lemaistre, UNESCO Representative to Cambodia, said in a press conference after the 28th Technical Session of ICC-Angkor: "talk about new construction in Zone 1 and Zone 2 in fact, this question has been well answered by director general of APSARA, but we just want to add a little. We would like to congratulate to APSARA that has taken measures to protect and demolish illegal constructions in zone 1 and zone 2. This is the work of the agreement between Cambodia and UNESCO. "
She added that "So we encourage APSARA to continue to protect Zone 1 and Zone 2 and protection laws as much as possible. What we have to say and decide is in the next ICC-Angkor in December and we would like to have a workshop on conservation. I think so far we are doing well, and so we really appreciate this process. "
