Apsara Authority cooperates with World Monument Fund in restoration of Prasat Phnom Bakheng.

Restoration project of Prasat Phnom Bakheng is the cooperation between Apsara Authority and World Monuments Fund, which was funded by the US government through its embassy in Cambodia, was started in 2004 and will be completed in late 2019 or early 2020.
Mrs. Cheam Phally, Project Coordinator of WMF said that WMF has started its project in preservation and restoration of temples in the region of Angkor since 1998. By the way, WMF has conducted the research and restoration project at Prasat Phnom Bakheng since 2004 up to now. She added that WMF is a non-profit organization, which is carrying out repairing work on the World Heritage in more than 80 countries around the world.
Mr. Hun Bunavath, Architect of this restoration project said there are three main factors that caused Prasat Phnom Bakheng in danger such as nature, human and material. He explained that erosion problem from the rain as well as the trees growing on the temple's stones and civil war have caused this temple and structures collapse subsequently. He added that the process of restoration is done by demolish the dilapidated sections and replace it with some new stones if it is necessary. However, mostly new stones are used as ground floor, while the walls are fixed by the remaining old stones of the temple.
